Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is work that helps AI search tools, such as Google’s AI Overviews or ChatGPT, find your pages, understand them and quote them accurately. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it, because an AI tool can only quote pages it can find.

At Adverdize, AI search optimisation comes with our Premium and Scale SEO packages, but not Starter. So the practical question is whether GEO is worth moving up a tier for. Nobody can promise that an AI tool will mention your business, and we don’t.

What Does GEO Work Involve?

Most of it happens on pages you already have. Typical work includes putting a direct answer near the top of key pages, keeping your business name, address and service details the same on your site and Google Business Profile, and using headings so each section answers one clear question.

For Google’s own AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google’s Search Central guidance says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link. There are no extra technical requirements, and Google says normal SEO fundamentals still apply.

How Is GEO Different From SEO?

SEO

GEO

Goal

Rank pages in search results

Be understood and quoted in AI answers

Main work

Keywords, technical health, links

Direct answers, consistent details, clear structure

Measurement

Rankings and traffic

Mentions in AI answers, which are harder to measure

Measurement is less settled than rank tracking. Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode within your overall Search Console traffic. Our posts on SEO consultants using AI and voice search and how AI and ChatGPT are raising the bar for SEO services cover the wider trend.

Which SEO Package Includes AI Search Optimisation?

Premium

Scale

Premium costs twice the Starter fee, and GEO isn’t the only thing you get for it. It also moves you from 10 to 25 target keywords, from one to two blog articles a month, and from foundation link building to guest blog link building. Longer commitments lower the monthly rate, to $800 for Premium on a 12-month plan. See our SEO packages in Singapore and our SEO pricing guide.

Whichever package you choose, the work starts with a site audit. Google’s AI features can only link to pages Google has indexed, so an indexing problem holds back both your rankings and your AI visibility.

Is GEO Worth Adding Now?

It depends on your site. If basic SEO problems remain, such as slow pages or unindexed content, fix them first. A site with steady rankings is in a better position to benefit from GEO. Expect a similar timeline to SEO, which typically takes three to six months to show results, and remember that AI answers can differ from one ask to the next. Our post on why SEO takes time covers the reasons.

If GEO feels too early to pay for, that’s a fair call. Our SEO packages are billed month by month with no contract, so you can start on Starter and move up later. Discounted multi-month plans may come with their own terms, so check before you commit.

Common GEO Questions

Will ChatGPT mention my business?
No one can promise that. GEO improves the chance that your pages are found and quoted, so judge it over several months rather than on a single answer.

Do I need new pages?
Usually not at first. Reworking existing pages with clearer answers and consistent details tends to come first. New pages make sense when a common customer question isn’t answered anywhere on your site.

How do I check whether I am mentioned?
Ask the AI tools your customers use the questions they’d ask, then note the date and the answer each month. Answers vary between asks, so look for a pattern over time rather than one result.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special markup?
Not for Google. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so spend the effort on clear, indexed pages first.
